Abstract
A practical approach for software process improvement H.E. Thomson & P. Mayhew School of Information Systems, University of East ABSTRACT This paper presents a new software improvement approach currently under development at the University of East Anglia. The approach is being tested within a number of organisations in two stages. The first stage has applied the new software process improvement approach to a variety of organisations and assessed the effectiveness of the evaluation method. The second stage, currently being progressed, is using the improved model on organisations some of whom have experience of other software improvement approaches. INTRODUCTION It is estimated that cancelled software projects account for 15% of all software development efforts each year. It is also estimated that 50% of all large software development projects (those larger than 1000 function points) run over budget and behind schedule [1], while almost all small projects run 20%
