Abstract
Concurrent Systems and Object Oriented techniques are brought together in this paper. The Fertilizer Plant Case Study provides a vehicle for teaching both aspects using a scenario which is of a realistic scale, despite the complexity of implementing the control system in a sequential language. A solution is developed using OORTK an object oriented multitasking real time kernel. OORTK allows undergraduate students to implement aspects of the control system as part of group work, or the whole system can form the basis of a programming or design project. By using a development tool more suited to real life scenarios it becomes possible to introduce practical examples which might otherwise be too complex for use in undergraduate studies.
