Abstract
Software engineering: the essence and the essentials in higher education courses J.B. Thompson Commercial Software Engineering Group, University of Sunderland, Priestman Building, ABSTRACT Fundamental principles, which it is believed should underpin any Software Engineering course, are outlined with the aim of encouraging reflection and provoking discussion. The findings from on-going research at the University of Sunderland with regards to the state of the software industry, its problems and its needs are reported. Details are then presented of those aspects which must be the essence of SE and the essentials which must underpin any SE course. Questions are also be raised whether or not such essentials are provided in computing courses across the country. Finally, details are given of approaches that are being adopted in the teaching of SE modules within a M.Sc. course in Computer Based Information Systems at Sunderland which the staff believe will enable our graduates to operate e
