Abstract
This paper discusses the role that development of an extensible class library for information retrieval has had on the teaching of object oriented methods in our department. The class library, named IR_Framework, has been implemented in C++ and designed using the Object Modelling Technique (OMT) proposed by Rumbaugh et al [4]. The design has been fully documented using the OMT CASE tool marketed by Select Software Tools and the implemented class library has been used to produce an application called PAPERS [6] which enables users to organise online search output. Though used as the basis for a number of research projects, the primary role of IR_Framework has been to support the teaching of object-oriented programming techniques to undergraduates taking an ad
