Abstract
Rules were developed to identify candidate entities in natural language specifications and these entities together with the relationships between them were presented in tables. For two business problems, novice systems analysts tended to develop better Entity-Relationship diagrams using these tables than they did using the original specifications. 1 Introduction Systems analysts have difficulty producing Entity-Relationship (ER) diagrams from the natural language initial specifications generated by end users who are typically unfamiliar with systems language (Diaz-Gonzalez and Urban [4], Saeki et al [7,8], Chin et al [2,3]).
