Abstract
Poor testing practices and a lack of measurement of both product and process are believed to contribute greatly to project failure. Thorough testing can be tedious and this contributes both to poor industrial performance and a subject which is difficult to teach. Many software metrics are statistical in nature and also tedious to collect without automation. Product metrics are the only class of metric which it is practical to give undergraduate students real experience.
