Abstract
During the past ten years, there has been an increasing realization that reducing household energy use and the resulting harmful emissions are not primarily a technological or engineering problem. Cost effective technologies that could reduce household energy use and emissions are widely available, but they are used by only a minority of households. Inadequate customer information on the nature and benefits of energy-efficient technologies is a key barrier to the greater use of these technologies that can be addressed through online customer information mechanisms. BC Hydro’s Home Energy Profile program is a computerized, online self audit that provides customers with detailed information on their energy consumption by end use together with recommendations on how the customer can reduce energy consumption in a cost effective manner.
