Abstract
Geographic information systems play a crucial role in the management of the environment and allocation of resources in many application domains. We require to discuss appropriate technologies and their requirements including the GIS technology issues such as data acquisition, database technology and interoperability tools as well as the availability of suitable models. In this paper, the project I-VOIR is discussed which is a prototype for an on-line GIS for inland shipping traffic.
