Abstract
A computational technique is presented for the numerical simulation of mass transfer by tidal motion of the sea in shallow waters. The Taylor-Galerkin approximation of second order is discussed for numerical solutions to the shallow water equations, to which an advection - diffusion equation with the resulting residual current is coupled for the mass transfer. Two-step scheme is used in the time integration and linear triangular finite elements are used in spatial discretisation. The present method is applied to the simulation of contaminant transport in the Ariake Sea. 1 Governing equations We shall be interested in tidal motion in a local area of the sea with the rectangular coordinates x,y,z (m). Let the surface of the mean sea level designate the reference plane
