Abstract
Numerical temperature calculation for composite deck slabs exposed to fire J.M. Davies & H.B. Wang Telford Institute of Structures and Materials Engineering, University of Salford, Salford ABSTRACT Large scale fire tests on elements of building construction are extremely expensive and there are considerable benefits to be gained if testing can be replaced by calculation. Numerical heat transfer analysis can therefore play an important role in predicting the effect of fire exposure on structural elements. In this paper, a two-dimensional finite element method is employed to determine the time-dependant temperature distribution in the cross-section of steel/concrete composite deck slabs exposed to standard fire conditions. The effects of the temperature-dependent thermal properties of materials, moisture content and boundary conditions have all received detailed study. A series of careful fire tests, conducted by P.W. Haar et al[l], were utilised to verify the accuracy of numerical
