Abstract
Adaptive mesh refinement strategies are presented for finite element simulation of metal casting . The algorithms are specially designed for industrial usage where foundry engineers do not normally have the necessary finite element knowledge or the required skills for mesh refinement. Different forms of error estimators, namely the global error and local error, are discussed. Mould filling and subsequent solidification problems of complex industrial shapes are tested for determining the most suitable strategies. Finally, comparison of the results is made with that of the fixed mesh analysis in terms of accuracy and efficiency. 1 Introduction The application of numerical methods such as FEM, FDM to simu
