Abstract
Surface and volume element integration for the modified Maxwell Stress Method C. Boccaletti & E. Santini Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Rome "La Sapienza ", Italy Abstract An innovative numerical technique for the FEM calculation of the electromagnetic torque in a rotating electric machine is presented, consisting in an extension of the well-known Maxwell stress tensor method, applied to circular paths that lie entirely in air. The mathematical model is introduced, and a new element scheme is shown. 1 Introduction There is a number of algorithms that allow numerical evaluation of mechanical forces due to electromagnetic interaction. They are commonly used in FEM analysis of power devices [l, 2, 31: 1, virtual works; 2. Maxwell stress tensor method (MST). These methods are completely general: in other words, they are not specialized for the evaluation of forces andlor of torques due to electromagnetic interaction in particular devices, such as electric machines.
