Invited Paper Mechanical identification of inhomogeneous solids M. van Ratingen, C. Oomens, J. Janssen Department of Computational and Experimental Mechanics, Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands ABSTRACT This paper presents a mixed numerical experimental method to determine the mechanical properties of inhomogeneous materials. The method is suited for composite and biological materials and is demonstrated for skin. It involves the measurement of displacement fields on a loaded specimen, finite modelling of the experiment (including the distribution of properties over the specimen surface) and parameter estimation based on the comparison between measured and computed data. The results presented, based on linear elastic orthotropic models with varying material symmetry directions, show the characterization method is valuable and effective.
