Abstract
Identification and validation of low velocity impact induced damage models for composite materials R. Dechaene, L. Jin Department of Applied Mechanics, University of Gent, Technologiepark 9, 9052 Gent/Zwijnaarde, Belgium INTRODUCTION Inferring models from observations and investigating the properties of these models is a basic activity of science. Mathematical models are used by engineers to predict the behaviour of all sorts of systems. Impact characterisation of composite materials, undertaken in view of the prediction of structural behaviour, involves three stages : i carrying out impact tests with careful observations of events , ii inferring a model from these observations and iii assessing the value of the parameters which appear in the model and validating its predictive capability. The Kalman filter is a technique which has been known for some time in the field of system identification. It provides for an optimal estima- tion of the paramete
