Abstract
The control volume methodology based on an enthalpy technique is presented for solving nonlinear advection-diffusion problem with phase change. The model is examined during keyhole plasma arc welding of stainless steel type AISI-304. The influence of the thermophysical properties of the metal and over all heat transfer coefficient on the keyhole welding process is studied. The results show that the shape of the weld pool and the temperature profile depend strongly on the input data to the model. The results are computed for different speeds of welding torch, various keyhole radii and different numerical parameters. The results are in a good agreement with a reported numerical simulation of heat transfer and fluid flow in the weld pool. A fully upwind and back substitution procedure is used for the solution
