Abstract
The contact/erosion algorithm in the ZeuS hydrocode S.B. Segletes, J.A. Zukas Computational Mechanics Consultants, P.O. Bo^'more MD ABSTRACT The ZeuS hydrodynamic code, which has been designed to run on PC computer architectures, is structured to model the interaction of multiple impacting bodies at high strain rates. Contacts, from the 10 m/s to 20 km/s range, may be simulated, to include the possibility of shock wave interaction. This paper discusses the contact/erosion processor of the Lagrangian ZeuS code, which exhibits several important features: contact surfaces that are automatically defined by the preprocessor and need not be explicitly specified by the user; a contact processor which, as the mesh erodes, automatically redefines the contact surface; the introduction of new contact surfaces to the contact algorithm, if mesh erosion results in the physical separation of material; the tracking of free flying mass points, if separated from the int
