Abstract
On the finite element analysis of steady state rolling contact U. Nackenhorst Institute of Mechanics, University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg, Holstenhofweg 85, W-2000 Hamburg 70, Germany ABSTRACT A description of contact problems for rolling bodies undergoing large elastic deformations is developed. The formulation of relative kinematics is based on an arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian description. The associated field equa- tions are solved by the Finite Element Method. Numerical results underline the proposed approach. INTRODUCTION The analysis of rolling contact phenomena is a very young discipline in en- gineering research. It took about 75 years after the first observation of slip in rolling contact by REYNOLDS before FOPPL [4] presented his solution for the contact problem of two elastic rollers in 1947. Based on this work extended theories and studies have been published in the past, i.g. BUFLER [2], BENTALL and JOHNSON [1], WANG and KNOTHE [7] etc. All
