Abstract
Numerical evaluation of Bessel functions with complex arguments, with application to plates resting on elastic foundations S. Alliney Istituto di Matematica Generale e Finanziaria, Universitd di Bologna, 40126 Bologna, Italy ABSTRACT Bessel functions with complex arguments are encountered in many engineering problems, mainly when a numerical solution is attempted via B.I.E. or series expansions. Here we consider one of such cases, a thin plate resting on a two-parameter foundation, and present a numerical technique for computing Bessel functions of the second type with complex or real argu- ments. INTRODUCTION We consider a thin plate, resting on a two-parameter, Paster- nak-type foundation [1]; it can be shown [2-4] that the vertical deflection under a vertical load is described (after normaliza- tion) by the following partial differential equation: V*w - 2kV*w + \v = q(x) (1) where k is a dimensionless soil-structure interaction parameter; i
