Abstract
A case study of bioremediation of petroleum hydrocarbon contaminated soils of a dismissed oil refinery in the industrial area of Bari (S. Italy) is presented. The soil and soil gas quality data collected in the characterization activities indicated that the shallow sediments were mostly contaminated by sorbed hydrocarbons whereas volatile hydrocarbons were found in the fractures of the rocks, affected by karst phenomena, underlying the superficial soil. According to laboratory and field tests, in-situ landfarming was chosen to clean up the less contaminated and shallow soil volumes; the zones with highly contaminated soil were removed and cleaned up by on-site landfarming operations in a large concrete basin.
