Abstract

New technologies in urban transport: emission control techniques and strategies C. Carnevali, R. Geneva, M. Mazzucchelli & A. Sasso Centra Interuniversitario di Ricerca Trasporti (Inter-university Centre of Transport Research), Genoa, Italy Abstract In urban transport new vehicles, equipped by electric motors for traction and diesel engines to produce electric power, are spreading. The two opposing solutions are the hybrid mode, in which the main application in the urban transit field is the "series" one, and the diesel-electric mode. The main difference between these solutions is that the first mode uses a diesel generator that works with a constant number of revolutions and is designed to keep the traction battery pack charged, while the second mode needs a bigger diesel generator, with a variable number of revolutions, that directly produces the traction power, as used for a long time in rail traction. On a hybrid bus, when the mean power required for the line is lower than t
