Abstract
Throughout the world, coastal zones are the most heavily populated and ecologically vulnerable areas. Many different and often conflicting interests exist in such areas which have to be (at least) properly addressed and (hopefully) carefully managed. For this purpose it is absolutely necessary to enhance the forecasting capacity regarding the medium- to long-term changes in the coastal marine system in the light of human activities and natural changes. In this framework, the primary objective of the European OPCOM project (Operational Modelling for Coastal Zone Management - Mast 3 - website: http://www.hydromod.de/projects/OPCOM/OPCOM.html) is to improve methods and techniques for continuous monitoring and operational forecasting in coastal waters. In this respect, operational mo
