Abstract
A refined three-dimensional layer-integrated model of flows in estuarine and coastal waters Yan Wu & R.A. Falconer School of Engineering, Cardiff University, UK Abstract A refined three-dimensional layer-integrated model for predicting free surface flows in estuarine and coastal waters has been developed. Instead of using the depth-integrated equations for predicting the water elevation field, a set of equations derived by layer-integrating the continuity and momentum equations over the total water depth have been used to calculate the water elevation fields. The refined model was firstly used to calculate the wind-driven flow in a rectangular basin to verify the model performance. A comparison between the model predictions and an analytical solution for this simplified test case has been made, with identical results being obtained. The model was then applied to simulate tide-induced velocity profiles in an ideal harbour, with the experiments being undertaken in the De
