Abstract
Located in the south zone of the city the Catacumba Trail is a joint project developed by the NPD (Design Research Nucleus of UniverCidade) and the Municipal Secretary of Environment. The trail starts at the Rodrigo the Freitas lagoon and leads up to the top of Sacopa hill where visitors enjoy a splendid view of Ipanema and Leblon, the Botanical Garden and the Tijuca Forest. Once an indigenous cemetery (catacomb) and later a slum, the area is now a Municipal Park by the "shores" of the densely populated Lagoon neighbourhood. From this park the trail goes up for 400 meters through the remains of the slum and what we believe are colonial ruins.
