Abstract
The Swedish Council for Building Research (BFR) launched an R&D programme entitled The Sustainable City in 1996, with the aim of ensuring long-term expertise, experience and knowledge in Sweden about sustainability and urban development. The overall objective is to stimulate inter-disciplinary and collaborative research intended to develop new tools, methods and processes as needed in order to change towns, cities and urban regions so that they provide a good living environment for their present inhabitants and for future generations. So far, BFR has invested SEK 28 million (Euro 3.1 million) in establishing four research groups in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Orebro, with additional financial support and active participation from local authorities.
