Abstract
The Influence of Boundary Layer Rolls Induced by the City of Berlin on the Distribution of Photo-Oxidants Guest contribution M.-U. Hammer, B Vogel and F Fiedler Institutfur Meteorologie und Klimaforschung, Universitat Karlsruhe / Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe, Postfach 3640, D-76021 Karlsruhe, Germany The problem Under certain conditions the increased roughness and the heat island caused by big urban environments induce secondary circulation systems like boundary layer rolls (Kropfli and Kohn, 1978). This organised convection is responsible for an increased boundary layer height and an enhanced vertical transport of the emitted precursors and the photochemical products in the urban plume. The influence of these secondary circulation systems on the distribution and production of photo-oxidants is not yet quantified and is therefore to be studied over the area of the Berlin Ozone Experiment (BERLIOZ).
