Rosset Laboratoire d'Aerologie IMR CNRS/UPS 5560. 14, avEdBelin, 31400 Toulouse, France Introduction The recent French legislation (12/30/1996) about air quality standards in line with European regulations, has resulted in the development of urban networks mainly designed for ozone concentration measurements. Three considerations are in order in this study. First this regulation only applies to large cities with over 100,000 inhabitants. Secondly, only very few stations have been implemented in rural areas. And thirdly, being a secondary pollutant, ozone is not formed right over the source areas of its precursors. The result is that ozone maxima are found in rural areas largely undocumented. In this context, numerical modelling appears as a unique
