Abstract
Assessment of Nitrogen Load to Danish Seas, Fjords, Creeks and Bays A contribution to subproject CAPMAN Thomas Ellermann, Ole Hertel, Henrik Skov and Lise Frohn National Environmental Research Institute, Department of Atmospheric Environment, P.O. Box 358, 4000 Roskilde, Denmark Introduction The deposition of atmospheric nitrogen compounds is an important nitrogen source to Danish seas, fjords, creeks and bays. High concentrations of nutrients (usually nitrogen is limiting factor) often lead to algae blooming followed by severe oxygen depletion. In worst cases this may lead to death of fish and benthic fauna. The atmospheric nitrogen loads of Danish seas, fjords, creeks and bays are assessed by the Danish National Environmental Research Institute (NERI) using a combination of data from a network of monitoring sites and model calculations performed with a transport-chemistry model, the ACDEP model (Atmospheric
