Abstract
Determination of Emission Factors for Volatile Organic Compounds from the Domestic Burning of Brown Coal (Lignite) A contribution to subproject GENEMIS Th. Knobloch, H Michael and W Engewald University of Leipzig, Department of Analytical Chemistry, Linnestr. 3, D-04103 Leipzig, Germany An analytical method for the quantitative determination of selected volatile organic compounds resulting from the residential burning of brown-coal briquets was developed and tested. This method combines dilution of the stack gas, adsorptive enrichment, thermal desorption and capillary gas chromatography. These data enable us to calculate emission factors of VOCs resulting from the burning of brown-coal briquets. Introduction The decentralised heating of living rooms is widespread in eastern Germany (1995 in Leipzig: 95,000 single fireplaces = 40 % of all homes!) and other countries in eastern E
