Abstract
This paper describes the validation of a mathematical model for predicting the water quality response of small, well-mixed tidal harbours which are exposed to pollution incidents. The model is based upon a 'tidal prism' or 'zero-dimensional' approach and uses a simple analytical technique to predict the dispersion of a conservative pollutant. The model simulates the effects of tidal flushing and freshwater discharge into the harbour as well as allowing a proportion of the expelled pollutant to return inside the harbour during subsequent flood tides. Since the mathematical formulation is based upon an analytical approach, the technique is able
