Abstract
Leachate produced at the Zoreda landfill in Asturias, Spain, was recirculated through a simulated landfill pilot plant. Prior to recirculation in said plant, three loads of different amounts of MSW were added at different stages, thus forming consecutive layers. Up until the present moment, approximately 3,333,000 Tm of MSW have been deposited in the landfill in 2.5 m-high layers which are covered with soil from the surrounding area and with slag from a nearby steelworks. The organic load of the recirculated leachate decreased rapidly from initial values of around 5,000 mg (Vl to stable values of around 1,300 mg/1.
