Abstract
Accurate simulation of the transport of metals and other inorganic contaminants requires modeling spatial variations in pH and soil chemistry in heterogeneous systems. A semi-empirical model has been developed to simulate metal binding to heterogeneous sorbents. The purpose of this paper it to describe the conceptual basis of the model, its mathematical formulation, and application to environmental settings. Rather than describing the underlying heterogeneity, the Simple Metal Sorption (SiMS) model describes macroscopic sorption characteristics. In the SiMS model, proton and metal binding to heterogeneous surfaces are conc
