Abstract
A series of impoundments have been designed to contain hydroelectric power plants (HEPP) on the River Sava. Impoundments will change the velocity of the river, its depths, nutrients cycling, buffering and self-purification capacity. In addition, settling will increase and eutrophication will probably worsen, etc. The US EPA QUAL2E water quality model has been used to simulate and predict possible changes in water quality and the consequent influence on the aquatic ecosystems. The first HEPP in the series is already constructed and operating. Measurements in this impoundment already show a perceivable change in wa
