Abstract
Poor maintenance of sewage systems and lack of coverage of some geographical areas is one of the most important causes of groundwater pollution in Italy. The most important aquifers used for supplying water are polluted by organic chemicals, leaching from sewage channels. EEC Directive 91/271 provides for a series of interventions for water pollution prevention and control. Among these is the extension of sewage systems to many currently uncatered-for areas. In addition to the EEC Directive, Italy's law 36/94 establishes a new organisation for the water industry (water supply, sewage systems, wastewater treatment) and aims to encourage the birth of a national Water
