Abstract
This paper presents the results of a preliminary numerical and experimental study of flows over cavities containing a heavy miscible fluid. The cleaning of a cavity by flushing with fluid from the duct is prevented by the formation of a stratified intermediate layer. The gravity forces acting in such a layer make it difficult for the duct fluid to penetrate into the cavity and this restricts the purging process. It is shown that cleaning can be enhanced by increasing cavity aspect ratio (Width/Depth) and Reynolds number. Experimental results in the form of Schlieren images are used to compare with the numerical calculations. 1 Introduction In a variety
