Abstract
One of the main problems of local authorities concerning environmental damage is to set up priorities of investments in order to improve the general state of the environment in a big city. This is an element of sustainable development in towns, related to settlements of the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. This paper presents a case study of Lodz, a city in Central Poland inhabited by nearly one million people.. The period studied was 1976- 95. The state of air pollution was estimated on the basis of the concentration of suspended particulate and sulphur dioxide. Data collected in 22 monitoring stations were analyzed. The aim of the report is to evaluate the impact of external and internal sources on the atmosphere in the city
