Abstract

One of the main problems of local authorities concerning environmental damage is to set up priorities of investments in order to improve the general state of the environment in a big city. This is an element of sustainable development in towns, related to settlements of the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. This paper presents a case study of Lodz, a city in Central Poland inhabited by nearly one million people.. The period studied was 1976- 95. The state of air pollution was estimated on the basis of the concentration of suspended particulate and sulphur dioxide. Data collected in 22 monitoring stations were analyzed.
