Abstract
Recent technological innovations in cellulose production have been motivated by economic and environmental considerations. In Chile, annual cellulose production amounts to 2 million tonnes and is expected to double within a decade, supported by increasing availability of raw materials. However, there is growing concern about environmental potential damage, since more than half of total plantations and 90% of current production capacity are located within the Bio Bio Basin (VIII Region, Chile). Unfortunately, there is little information on the main environmental aspects associated with cellulose production along it life cycle, under conditions prevailing in Chi
