Abstract
This paper describes the development of a 'tidal prism' model for predicting the flushing characteristics of small, well-mixed tidal harbours subjected to non-point-source pollution incidents. The model relates the water quality response of the basin to the external forcing effects of the tides, pollutant loading and freshwater inflow. In general, the tidal flushing of a harbour depends not only upon the geometry of the basin and the tidal range, but also on the proportion of effluent water which leaves the harbour on the ebb tide, mixes with the surrounding coastal water and partially returns inside the basin on subsequent flood tides.
