Abstract
A numerical model is developed to provide in-depth information about the flow pattern in the forebays of Wanapum and Wells Dams on the Columbia River, WA. The model predicts the complex patterns of secondary flow that are basic to three dimensional mixing and transport. The model is validated with data taken in a physical laboratory model. The calculations are in good agreement with the measurements. Presented also are calculations that show the effect on forebay flow pattern of a novel fish bypass concept, the surface attraction facility, which guides the fish around the turbines without forcing them into a high-pressure region. Introduction A comprehensive research program is underway at the Iowa Institute of Hydraulic Research (IIHR) to develop and test bypass systems for downstream migrating juv
