Abstract
Head losses in river-like reservoirs vary with discharge and water levels. Thus the gross head of a cascade of hydropower stations varies with time. Nevertheless, in many optimisation models, storage routing (level-pool routing) is used neglecting the variation of the head losses. In the model presented in this paper head losses are calculated based on dynamic routing (St. Venant equations), that is head losses are calculated using channel geometry and roughness and the manner in which the stations are actually operated. As a result, the head at each station can be calculated accurately as a function of time. The generated power is then based on the actual head as obtained
