Abstract
In many countries, water collected by drains is reused for irrigation without further treatment . Therefore, it must be - at least - protected from harmful compounds. Due to lack of proper isolation, landfills containing poisonous or radioactive wastes when constructed in the neighbourhood of cultivated areas may cause infiltration of harmful components to the perforated drain pipes through the unsaturated zone. Similar but less critical situations occur when the farmers use excessive fertilizers. The problem is treated using two unsteady two - dimensional mathematical models. In the first model, the fluid flow towards the drains through the soil is studied. The obtained results are used as input data for the second model where the process of contaminant transport is applied. Consideration is given to both
