Abstract
A new method for coastal protection is introduced. The method involves the application of submerged vanes. The numerical simulation of the flow field around the vanes suggested that they could effectively modify the local flow field thereby keeping the sediment transport local. The vanes function best at a flow angle of 15 degrees for coast parallel flows. The main flow feature is two large recirculating regions occurring between and in the wake of the vanes. The potential of numerical technique for prediction of complex flow fields is demonstrated. 1. Introduction Beach erosion is a major coastal engineering problem, which threatens human development and recreation along coastlines. There are several solutions for protecting the coast from the action of the sea. Th
