Abstract
The coastal research facility at Hydraulics Research Ltd, UK I.E. Shepherd Hydraulics Research Ltd, Wallingford, Oxon, UK 1. INTRODUCTION 1.1 Concept and Requirement Extensive lengths of the UK coastline are vulnerable to the relentless activity of erosion, loss of beaches and coastal defences, and the pollution effects due to long sea outfalls and sewage sludge dumping. These factors generate an urgent need for a nationally coordinated research programme. A review of laboratory facilities indicated that flumes suitable for studying coastal processes and gathering validation data existed, but no suitable large coastal wave basin was available. As a result of this conclusion, the Science and Education Research Council funded a joint project with Hydraulics Research Ltd to build the Coastal Research Facility (CRF). The basin is being used by groups of visiting postgraduate research students from several Universities. Research during the next few years will include su
