Abstract
The paper presents an analytic method for estimating capacity for repeated traf- fic patterns on a railway section. The vision is to use the method as a basis for developing tools for infrastructure analysis that support the process of designing infrastructure that meets the traffic needs. The idea underlying the method is that traffic patterns can be modelled as discrete event systems, where the events considered are associated with trains waiting for other trains. The Swedish National Rail Administration (Banverket) supports the research from which the presented ideas result. Keywords: railway capacity, discrete event systems, max plus algebra. 1 Introduction The traffic on the Swedish railway network has increased considerably in recent years and large investments in railway infrastructure are planned in order to meet the expected need for higher railway capacity. When
