Abstract

The post-failure motion of a simply supported beam subject to a blast loading, which causes failure at the supports, is investigated analytically. The theoretical solution adopts a rigid, perfectly plastic idealisation and is exact in the sense that it satisfies the requirement of the upper and lower bound theorems of dynamic plasticity. Attention is focused on the motion of the beam after it fails and becomes detached from the supports. Part of the energy remaining in the beam after failure is responsible for changing the beam shape after severance, a feature investigated here. 1 Introduction The response of a rigid, perfectly plastic beam subjected to an impulsive load may involve several pa
