Abstract
In 1992 the Dutch HSL project team was given the challenge of demonstrating to local authorities the effects of running high speed trains on an existing line carrying dense traffic. A simulator was thus developed which visualizes the train process and accepts simple infrastructure, timetable and rolling stock specifications. Trains are shown during the simulation with a virtual length based on their speed and braking characteristics, and distance-time and distance- speed curves are plotted. This reveals how trains interact and how infraclaims develop as trains gain speed. The infraclaim is also recorded and incorporated into the distance-time curve, enabling problem areas (shown in red) to be detected at a glance. This clarity of presentation makes the simulator
