Abstract

The use of computer modelling and human factors in control room design A.D. Livingston" & P.M. Anderson^ "Human Factors and Safety, WS Atkins, WS Atkins House, Birchwood Boulevard, Birchwood, Warrington, Cheshire, ^Design - Control & Communications, Hong Kong Mass Transit Railway Corporation, Hong Kong Abstract Designing a new Central Control Room for the busy Hong Kong Mass Transit Railway is a complex task, particularly when it involves major changes to both technology and the organisational structure. The paper discusses the use of 3-dimensional computer modelling techniques to develop a visual image of the proposed control room design and to verify its functional effectiveness. Walk through simulations were produced using AutoCAD and AutoDESK software. This allowed realistic impressions of the facilities, workspace and ergonomic considerations from any position in the room. In conclusion, the paper reviews the adequacy of the technique from a users perspective
