Abstract
Today, thanks to the technological development concerning high power electronic components, it is possible to utilize controlled AC/DC converters also in metrorail transit systems. If the Electrical Substations (ESSs) are equipped with thyristor bridges, the DC output voltage may be controlled according to different strategies for optimal energy management. In this paper the authors show a general purpose methodology for the definition of optimal control strategies and the evaluation of their effects on the behaviour of the whole system. At first, utilizable algorithms for unconstrained nonlinear optimization are evaluated and then it is shown how the control strategy may be defined by integration of such algorithms with a system simulator, taking
