Abstract
The task of diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining any type of transit equipment can be quite difficult and time-consuming, especially without the aid of highly sophisticated diagnostic test facilities. It can also be very difficult to train inexperienced technicians as well as experienced personnel on the proper maintenance and troubleshooting techniques of new equipment. Incorrect diagnosis leads to repeat maintenance where time and money is wasted in replacing 'good' parts. When these parts are large power electronic components such that are used in modern transit vehicles, the time and money spent is significant. AEG Transportation Systems, Inc. of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania investigated the application of neural networks in a pilot project t
