Abstract

We have developed and implemented an "Automatic Wheel Flats Detection System" for above-ground detection of flats, peeling of the wheel surface, and other abnormalities which occur on the running surface of train wheels. This system uses an original decision algorithm which takes into account such parameters as the speed of the train and the position of generated flat vibrations to indicate the specific wheel on a train car having the flat. The input to this system is the output voltage from an accelerometer attached to the rail. Also, the Automatic Vehicle Identification System by means of microwaves make it possible to put out automatically the report of flat data which are arranged in order by car identification number. 1.
