Abstract
The implementation of a geographic information system for the management and controlling of the fixed assets of the SBB F. Ebneter" & R. Schneeberger^ o Works Services, Schweiz Bundes Bahnen, Switzerland 1 Current Situation The works services of the SBB are responsible for the opera- tional availability of a large asset base; the SBB network encompasses over 4000 km of track, 750 stations, 7000 bridges and approximately 220 tunnels with a total length of over 200 km. The works departments must ensure the operational avail- ability of the infrastructure through targeted measures (maintenance, repairs, renewal). When operational require- ments demand it, the infrastructure must be expanded with smaller extensions or larger construction projects. Important annual investments are made in maintenance and new con- struction; 700 million franks for maintenance and 1500 million franks for new projects.
